Macomb County Home Help Program — Get Paid to Care for a Family Member

Macomb County families in Sterling Heights, Warren, and Clinton Township can get paid for in-home caregiving through the Michigan Home Help Program.

If you're in Macomb County — Warren, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Roseville, St. Clair Shores, or anywhere else in the county — and you're caring for a family member who needs help at home, there's a Michigan program you should know about.

It's called the Michigan Home Help Program, and it pays qualifying family members to provide in-home care for a loved one who needs help with daily activities.

Not a stranger. Not an agency employee. You — the family member who is already there.

How the Michigan Home Help Program Works in Macomb County

The Michigan Home Help Program is a Medicaid benefit run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). It's available across the entire state of Michigan, including every city and township in Macomb County.

Here's the basic process:

  1. The person receiving care qualifies for Michigan Medicaid (or applies and is approved)
  2. MDHHS schedules an in-home assessment to evaluate care needs
  3. The caseworker authorizes care hours based on the assessment
  4. A family member enrolls as the paid caregiver
  5. Care begins — and the caregiver receives paychecks through the state

The program is designed for people who need hands-on help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, moving around safely, toileting, and eating.

Who Can Be a Paid Caregiver?

Most family members can qualify — adult children, siblings, parents of adult children, and other relatives. Close friends can also be caregivers in some cases.

Spouses cannot be paid caregivers under the Home Help Program — that's MDHHS policy. But other family members in the home may qualify.

You don't need a healthcare background or formal training. You need to be willing to provide care, pass a background check through the state's CHAMPS system, and complete the enrollment paperwork.

As of January 1, 2026, the pay rate is $18 per hour. Hours are authorized based on the assessment of the person's care needs.

| Hours/Week | Monthly Earnings | |-----------|-----------------| | 15 hrs/week | ~$1,170/month | | 20 hrs/week | ~$1,566/month | | 30 hrs/week | ~$2,340/month |
