The Enrollment Process
From eligibility check to first paycheck —
we handle every step.
Most families complete the full Michigan Home Help enrollment in 2–4 weeks. Here's exactly what that looks like.
Phase 1
Eligibility Verification
1. Complete the eligibility quiz
Answer 5 questions about Michigan residency, Medicaid status, care needs, caregiver relationship, and county. We'll give you an immediate preliminary answer.
2. Free consultation call
We review your situation in detail, confirm eligibility criteria, and walk you through what to expect. No paperwork yet — just clarity.
3. Care needs assessment review
We review the level of care the recipient requires to confirm alignment with MDHHS Time and Task standards before submitting anything.
Phase 2
MDHHS Application
1. MDHHS Home Help application
We prepare and submit the MDHHS application (MSA-4676) on your behalf, ensuring every field is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
2. Gather supporting documents
We provide a simple checklist of what's needed — proof of Michigan Medicaid, care recipient's ID, and basic household information.
3. MDHHS confirmation
Once submitted, MDHHS reviews the application. We follow up directly so you don't have to navigate the department on your own.
Phase 3
Provider Enrollment
1. CHAMPS provider enrollment
We handle caregiver enrollment in the CHAMPS system — Michigan's Medicaid management platform. This includes the criminal history screening requirement.
2. Background check coordination
CHAMPS requires a background check for all enrolled caregivers. We walk you through the process step by step.
3. HHAeXchange EVV setup
Electronic Visit Verification is required for all Home Help services. We set up your HHAeXchange account and make sure you understand how to log visits correctly.
Phase 4
First Paycheck
1. ASAP payment system setup
Medicaid pays caregivers through the ASAP payment system. We ensure your account is correctly configured for timely, accurate payment.
2. First billing cycle
We guide you through your first billing cycle — how to use HHAeXchange to log visits and submit for payment correctly.
3. Ongoing support
We stay available after enrollment. If you have questions about EVV compliance, billing, or any changes to your authorization — we're here.
Common Questions
Everything families ask before enrolling
How long does the full enrollment process take?
Most families complete enrollment in 2–4 weeks from the initial eligibility call. The timeline depends on how quickly MDHHS processes the application and how quickly the caregiver completes the background check.
Does the caregiver need to stop working their current job?
No. Home Help is not necessarily a full-time position. Hours are authorized based on the care recipient's assessed needs. Many caregivers provide care in addition to their regular employment.
Does the person receiving care need to already be on Medicaid?
Yes — the care recipient must be enrolled in Michigan Medicaid (including Healthy Michigan Plan). If they're not currently enrolled but may qualify, we can help with that process as well.
Can a spouse be a paid caregiver?
Generally no. The Michigan Home Help Program typically does not allow spouses to be paid as caregivers for each other. However, adult children, siblings, other family members, and even close friends often qualify.
What does Home Help pay for?
Authorized care under the Home Help Program includes Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility assistance, and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) like light housekeeping and laundry.
Is there a cost to work with Home Help Navigators?
No. Our services are completely free to the families we serve. We are compensated through the provider arrangement — you never pay us directly.
